s on which the prognosis of
your patient depends.
- The correct diagnosis of a
condition is not only necessary rather it is essential. Suppose the
diagnosis of blood leukaemias (blood cancers) which is the job of an
experienced haematologist/pathologist, be diagnosed on blood films for
special smear , and even film made for Malaria, if diagnosed early
in time, the same is true for blood cancers as well "a stitch in time
saves nine". In early stages the prognosis is very good as the blast
count in blood and bone marrow is less in number and general condition
of the patient is quite well, as the disease advances, the blasts count
increases and the general condition of the patient deteriorates and
he/she is not able to cope with the stress of the anti cancer drugs and
we see that due to late diagnosis we loose a precious life
- It is not easy to differentiate thalassaemia
particularly minor one from iron deficiency. The treatment of iron
deficiency is iron supplementation, while iron is poison for
thalassaemias.
- Platelets can be reduced in many conditions like ITP,
Bone marrow aplasia, deficiency of vitamins, Myelodysplastic syndromes,
Leukaemias, which can lead to life threatening bleeding. The treatments
of various conditions is quite different. For example the treatment of
ITP is steroids, that of vitamin deficiency is to give vitamins, blood
cancers chemotheraputic agents and for aplasia blood transfusions and
immunosuppressive medications.
- For leishmaniasis specific drugs like Sodium
Stibogluconate is given, it will not respond to antimalarials ,
antibiotics and anti TB drugs even given on kilograms basis.
- That is why correct diagnosis is essential to save the
precious life of your patient.
